Super Bowl XXXIX Analysis and Pick
« Result #9 on Feb 5, 2005, 1:15pm »

The New England Patriots are on the cusp of greatness, having already won two of the last three Super Bowls. It’s difficult to compare teams from different eras, but a win this Sunday would officially classify the Pats as a dynasty, and in an era with disloyal players, free agency, and the salary cap, Head Coach Bill Belichick is working magic that Vince Lombardi never had to worry about.

When analyzing this game, it’s impossible to think of the Patriots as anything but a football machine. They’re not laden with Pro-Bowl players or even players destined for the Hall of Fame. They’ve even lost several of their strongest parts on defense along the way this season, but that has not stopped them from winning 31 of their last 33 games. The Pats as a team truly are greater than the sum of their parts, and now think about what Belichick will have planned for the Philadelphia Eagles given the last two weeks to prepare for them. Philly is a solid team but was given the luxury of a weakened conference this season, while the Patriots had to face two of the best teams in the entire NFL just to make it this far. Look at the destruction New England has left in its path to the Super Bowl. They faced the league’s No. 1 rated offense, the Indianapolis Colts, and held them to just three points in their 20-3 win in the divisional playoff round. They then went into Pittsburgh and scorched the league’s No. 1 rated defense for 41 points in their victory against the Steelers.

The key to victory for the Patriots is their consistency. Their playmakers don’t grab headlines like WR Terrell Owens or QB Donovan McNabb, but before you know it, the Patriots have picked off two interceptions and are up 10-0. If the Patriots reach the magic number of two turnovers, they will win Super Bowl XXXIX. How do I know that? During this season’s playoff run, the Pats have yet to turn the ball over and have seven takeaways. Looking at all eight Belichick playoffs wins, the Patriots are plus-16 in turnovers, taking 21 turnovers away from their opponents, while coughing the ball up only five times. If the D can steal two turnovers, leave it to the offense to cash in on those Philadelphia mistakes. The biggest reason for their discipline and consistency is Mr. Big Game himself, QB Tom Brady. Brady is 8-0 in the playoffs and 2-0 in the Super Bowl. A third Super Bowl MVP before the age of 28 would make him a football immortal and comparisons to Joe Montana would not be off the mark. He has never put up the same statistics of a Peyton Manning, but in whose hands do you trust the ball if this game comes down to a two-minute drill?

As the week as worn on, many have jumped on the Eagles bandwagon. What if Owens comes back and has a big game? What if McNabb scrambles for big gains? What if RB Michael Westbrook runs all over the defense? For all the Eagles “What ifs?” the Patriots are always “What ares.” You know Belichick will have every man ready for action. You know their defense will focus on Westbrook since he is the Eagles’ most dynamic and talented player on offense. Force McNabb to look to a second or third option and look out for the screen pass in the flat to Westbrook. The Pats have more playmakers on defense than the Eagles have on offense, and unless Philly is granted a 12th player on the field, there’s no way they can protect their quarterback from the likes of LB Tedy Bruschi, LB Mike Vrabel, and the returning DT Richard Seymour.

I’ll put my money on Brady and RB Corey Dillon because you know once the Pats get the lead, it’ll be Dillon up the middle and a heavy dose of Belichick’s genius to lead the Patriots to their third Super Bowl victory. Take the Patriots minus 7, as I see this one to be a 34-24 Patriots win. I’m playing a bigger wager on a tease to bring down the spread to zero and the over down to 41.5. In order to beat the champ, you’ve got to knock out the champ, and the Patriots can’t be knocked out.
